Vero Beach has just launched a “Homes for Warriors” program that provides homes to wounded soldiers as a respect to the sacrifices they have made for the country.
The Space Coast Paratroopers Association operates the program and determines which wounded veterans are qualified for the program.
Sgt. Burdette, 2005 graduate of Palm Bay High School, is the first recipient of the program. He was associated with 3rd Infantry Division, 4th Brigade, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, out of Fort Stewart, Ga. He was wounded in a rocket mishap that occurred on June 9, 2013 when he was assigned to protect a convoy in Afghanistan along with his 7-member unit. The unfortunate accident led to his leg amputation just below his knee. He was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland for rehabilitation.
The program coordinator stated that it is an honor for them to provide homes to brave soldiers like Sgt. Burdette who have contributed to the country’s military. He also expressed gratitude towards the city’s mayor and council for permitting the implementation of the project. The program includes a grand welcome of the Burdette family in the city with their family and escort to their new homes. As such the Burdette family’s homecoming will include a police escorted limousine ride from the title company. The home will be further handed over to the family in a special ceremony after the ribbon cutting.
The program is a small effort towards satisfying the needs of wounded soldiers by providing them a stable home.
